China’s First Integrated PV+Storage+Charging Solar Energy Bus Station

News2025-04-27

On September 6, 2024, China’s first integrated “photovoltaic-storage-charging service” bus charging station was officially launched in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. This innovative project marks a significant step in empowering new energy solutions for urban public transportation, combining solar power generation, energy storage, electric vehicle (EV) charging, and comprehensive services to create a model for sustainable mobility.

Daytime Generation, Nighttime Storage, Peak-time Release

A 35kW solar car port was built in the station, and 8 charging piles were set up, which can charge 11 new energy vehicles at the same time, catering to both buses and other electric cars.

During daylight hours, the PV system direct power supply to charging vehicles. Any unused electricity is stored in the battery system.

At night, when electricity prices are lower, the system can also draw power from the grid to “recharge” the batteries, optimizing costs. During peak charging periods, the stored energy is released to meet high demand, ensuring a stable power supply.

Advanced Energy Storage Technology

At the core of the station’s efficiency is its powerful energy storage system:

Battery cells: 3.2V, 280Ah lithium-ion cells

Module Design: 16 cells form a battery module; 13 modules connected in series create a cluster, storing 186kWh per cluster

Total storage capacity: With 8 clusters, the system holds approximately 1.49MWh of energy- enough to support sustained peak-hour demand.

At the same time, this solar system includes 2 pieces of 500kW power conversion systems (PCS), which a key device that connects the energy storage system and the power grid, realizes the two-way conversion of electric energy, and manage the working mode between battery clusters. Staff can also monitor real-time PCS status via the energy management system (EMS) for seamless functionality.

Convenient Facilities & Cultural Construction

Beyond energy innovation, this station enhances user experience through convenient facilities and cultural construction. Based on the local food culture, it introduced Nanjing's time-honored brands and Chinese fast food chain brands with rich dishes and affordable prices to provide more choices for citizens.

It brings together creative souvenirs such as postcards and refrigerator magnets customized by Nanjing's characteristic scenic spots and Nanjing Museum, allowing residents to feel the city's history, culture, and charm while charging their cars.

This station’s success represents a practical example of the “bus + life” model, blending public transportation with community needs.

As cities worldwide aim to meet climate goals and electrify transport, the station creates a reliable, cost-saving system, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and enhances quality of life.

Charging cars from the solar system, during the day, recharging batteries from the grid at night, and deploying power during peaks isn’t just about efficiency- it’s about creating a resilient, cost-effective ecosystem that benefits both utility grids and everyday users.
